I was recently asked to write an article about my Grandparents Victory Garden. I had posted pictures of my Aunt in the Garden in 1942.

I learned a great deal, Illinois led the country having 600,000 Victory Gardens in 1942. The Coles County Fair gave out extra awards for Victory Gardens.

After we achieved Victory in Europe and Asia, the gardens were referred to as, Peace Gardens.
When I was little Grandad still had a garden there, mostly growing tomatoes. I can remember him hanging aluminum pie pans on poles to keep the black birds away.
The garden is still there today.......but it is peonies and daffodils.
