Victorian Autograph Book

I have a little pink today for Pink Saturday on this autograph book.

This is my Great Great Emma's autograph book.
One of the things I found when cousin Fred gave me
our Great Aunt Annie's things.

the first entry is on Nov 1887
Most are sweet poems written by her classmates or
her many many cousins.

This is Aunt Emma's house on the same street as my 1515.
Aunt Emma had polio and never married. She lived with 2 of her
widowed sisters. She was the youngest of 13 and the last living sibling,
dying in 1941 just 4 months after my Great Grandfather, her brother.

Unfortunately, here is what it looks like today. You can still make out one of
 the stain glass windows.

I am sure there were many a gathering, and maybe some signage in the
autograph book.
Here are the siblings, Aunt Emma is sitting in the front in her
wheelchair. My Great Grandfather is the man on the very left.
How difficult it must of been then to have been in a w/c.
One of my distant cousins, remembers wheeling her downtown to
go shopping, since her house was a block from the town square.
I think she was a beautiful young woman.
Born during the Civil War in 1863 and dying
on the eve of WWII in 1941.
My Great Aunt became the keeper of her things.
I now am the keeper of many of her treasures.
Letters, notes, cards, and
 the Autograph book.

Ann, you seem to always have the neatest family heirlooms. How lucky for you that you have these items. Unfortunately today, things like this is considered "junk" and thrown away instead of keeping. I can remember my dad having his dad's old journal where he kept everything recorded, down to a can of snuff, and the price of it. I know things were tough in the "old days" but things have changed so much and things just don't mean as much to people these days, and I for one think it is sad. Anyhoo, sorry for the book just wrote. Have a great week-end!

How priceless is that autograph book, I love it. My grandma Jewell left all of her scrapbooks to me-hence my love of writing down all of my memories.

You have such a wealth of family artifacts and objects, Ann. That's so rare. I love seeing the old house. The old photos have such a romantic look to them. The very idea of an autograph book is charming. It's great seing it all.

;)- would have loved to have known her. Glad you are the keeper now. You do it so well.
You need to show the vintage photo of the house is all its splendor to the present owner, so they can see how grand she can be with love and the right colors...it would be wonderful if they took her back.

So nice to have all these ancestral photos, Ann! My mom is the keeper of lineage items and photos and I am thinking I will probably take over sometime when she can no longer deal with it!

Thanks for sharing all of this.
Loved reading it.

What a treasure and a piece of family history. How sad today the Face Book has replaced those sweet, sentimental autograph books. Face Book, while it will live forever in tech land, it leaves nothing to hand down to the next generation and the family history is lost.

At least it's still there? Is this the house that was for sale last year for $20,000. I think I looked in the windows and it was so wonderful inside. I wish I would have taken pictures. Such a sad story, but I loved this post.

How lovely to get such a treasure to save! And so nice to be able to know so much of your history. The house was much nicer before they changed it and she was a beautiful young woman.
Hope you have a nice day.

OMG
My grandmother's name was Emma. Her youngest daughter had polio and never married.
My dad was in a wheelchair since he lost his legs at age 21. i loved my grandmother and my Aunty and of course my wonderful father.
I have an autograph book too.
What memories you have at 1515 Ann. I loved seeing the same stained windows even though I liked the old house much better.
This post made me smile inside my heart tonight. Thank you.
Night night

Oh what a wonderful treasure you behold in your Aunt's autograph book. The pictures, the writings are priceless. Such a piece of history. Looking at your Aunt, I am amazed at her face. Her serenity, her peace shows on her beautiful face. Most pictures of that day no one smiled and if you look at the picture of her with the darker dress, there is that hint of smile and the eyes light up from within. What a women she must have been to have polio, a w/c in that day and age and still the camera found her true beauty. Oh what a blessing. I think there is a lot of your aunt carried on you dear friend. Thank you for sharing with all of us and thank you always for stopping to visit me.
