A Sentimental Look into the Past

This last weekend was a special one, it was the 100th Anniversary of the Ashmore Presbyterian Church building.
It was my ancestors church of my Maternal Grandmother. The church itself is 176 years old but the building was built in 1917.

I realized a couple of years ago when I was scanning their records that the anniversary was coming up. Of course, you know me I had to ask if anyone was doing something to commemorate the date?

I have so much documentation I decided to write a book to mark the occasion

just loved doing this, using my family records and pictures to put this together.

The church is small and several people did a great job putting together a 2 day event.
Funny thing is, if I go back far enough the members of the church are related to me, and their ancestors were the ones that founded the church in 1841.

the church was beautifully decorated

they came up with the wonderful idea to decorate the altar with flowers to honor your ancestors.
Our Reunion purchased 2 arrangements, and I purchased a small one for my Grandmother, her parents and siblings.

My 3rd Great Grandparents, both who were original members.

My other 3rd Great Grandparents. Phebe was alive but William was deceased when the church was formed, he is a Revolutionary War Veteran

My surprise when I got there and saw one bouquet on the top of the altar, it was the one for my Grandmother and her family.........lump in my throat.

the first day they had children events, food and as part of the Genealogy Society we had the church records open for people to find their ancestors.
The lady on the left is my cousin through my 4th Great Grandfather, and the 2 on the right we share the same 2nd Great Grandfather.

I did a couple of bulletin boards to show the 2 churches that were merged to make the current church.

cousin Fred came both days, wearing his Galbreath tartan plaid shirt!
We were listening to a wonderful band that was performing, that was so fun.

Day 2, was met with my anticipation as the members were hoping for a good turn out.
They even replicated the program that was presented on the same day 100 yrs ago.
Sitting in the pew singing the same songs my Grandmother sang on that date in 1917 was a special feeling. I was so happy the church is still standing, that people still love and attend the church.
I could feel my ancestors spirits.

the church was nearly full, and I could see the happiness on the faces of the members. I was so glad for them, that their hard work to honor their church was a success.

rare...picture of me with my Mitchell ancestors flowers.

Then for a potluck in the church basement.
It looked so pretty, white tablecloths and they used the church china.

Look what I spotted!!

yep! PYREX!! Butterprint Cinderella bowl.........who brought that!

Afterwards Fred and I took the flowers out to our family cemetery.
Laid roses on all our families graves.

Fred placing some on his Grandparents, my Great Grandparents grave.
Love you Mama and Papa

My 3rd Great Grandparents. He lived through the Battle of Guildford Courthouse in 1781 in which his home was destroyed and his father taken captive.

My 3rd Great Grandmother, born in Philadelphia, met her husband at a party given by her Uncle for his friend General Washington.

Somehow they all ended up in a small town in Central Illinois.
Together they formed a church based on their Presbyterian beliefs.

The church stands tall to this day in that small town of 700 people.

If you would like to read about the day in 1917 here is a newspaper article

Oneida and Fostoria Made Melmac?

A trip to my jeweler to get watch batteries turned into a grand discovery!

Fostoria and Onedia made Melmac dishes?

I have used the same Jewelry store for over 20 years. They have been in business since 1936 and are a 3rd generation business. They use to also be in the bridal business and I got my wedding dress there also.

Recently the owners wife passed away. I miss seeing her smiling face, and she always wore a flower in her hair. Since they have been in business that long, do you remember when we got married we purchased our china, crystal and wedding rings all at the jewelry store?
Her son has taken over the business and is in the process of going through things.
In a back room they had drug out boxes from the basement.
Do you want to see what we have Ann?
YES!

I spotted the white melmac immediately! My friend has been looking for some. Here was a entire set, plates, bowls, cups, saucers serving pieces in pristine condition..........NEVER USED.
When I flipped them over and saw
I was astonished.
I quickly was calling and texting my friend

then I spotted the turquoise!
My friends favorite, flipped them over and saw
Fostoria!
I thought they would look good with the white
the pattern is Retro Chalet and is from the 50's.
Yes these have been sitting in storage since the 50's!
Squeel!
I picked up all 60 + pieces for my friend for $1 a piece.
found information on line about them

I felt like Mike and Frank unearthing things that have been boxed away for 60 years!
Are you wondering if I got anything?

YES!
Fall Onedia melmac
only 3 dinner plates, platter, one cup and sauce, 2 sizes of bowls
great design creamer and sugar
$20 for all mine
Love the fact they are new, never used and vintage.

I need to go back, why?
American Fostoria with the stickers still on
Picked up 3 plates and this saucer

The use to have my blue Fostoria Navarre Blue
but could not find any
But if you like Navarre they have plenty of creamer and sugars
or some assorted glasses
they even had more fostoria like my Mom's holly
clear plates with etching.
another table had 1980's stoneware sets, Candlewicking, coin glass, fostoria juice glasses, candlesticks! It was overwhelming.

and these I thought were Blue Ridge dishes at first
they had a creamer and sugar
the company went out of business in 1957 before I was even born!
I need to go back and really spend sometime there.
They also were bringing out vintage jewelry and I bought a beautiful brooch for $20.

It was wonderful and sad at the same time.
I wonder what Mrs. Butterfield would think?
I guess as things went out of fashion they went to the basement.

My friend is delighted and plans on using them.

How about a kitten update?

Pounce shows a interest in helping with my blog posts!

Jasper is enjoying the cooler weather and the windows open

But they are great buddies

found the asleep in a storage bin

Last week we were in Chicago for my cousins wedding

she was beautiful, yes that is the groom looking at her with adoring eyes.
5 of the 7 of us were together again
Winkler cousins

Mr went with me.
the next morning we had a great breakfast at
Southern Belle's in Plainfield
check out that omelet!

Vacation started today.
Love fall, my birthday is a week from Saturday
so that means.....Cousin Weekend!

Returning a Piece of History

This a genealogy post.
Our family cemetery where my 3rd GGrandfather who was in the Revolutionary War is buried has somehow changed names of the years.

Someone slapped up this sign
Patsy Mitchell Golladay Cemetery many years ago?

The cemetery has always been Mitchell Cemetery, named after my other 3rd GGrandfather who owned the land it was on, the first burial being in 1834.

The gentleman at the local monument company and I came to the same conclusion,
in the 1970's many cemeteries were read in preparation for the Bicentennial.
If a cemetery did not have a formal sign out front, who ever was reading it just gave it a name.
Patsy Mitchell was my GG Uncle's wife? There is only one Golladay buried in the entire cemetery?

Cousin Fred and I have been on a mission to get it back to the original name.
We started at the Courthouse, the name there was still Mitchell.
Then we spoke to the Cemetery board members, that was fine with them as well.
So cousin Fred couldn't wait to rip that sign down and proudly bring it to me!
There it sits in my laundry room at 1515
It is a piece of history.

Well here is what our family did
A new official marker!
I had the put the established date on the front with my 3rd Great Grandfathers name on it who came to Coles County IL in 1828.

We have it up 4 feet so you can see it when the beans and corn come up.

On the back I had them put the information about my 4th GGrandparents who are buried in the field just south of the cemetery. He was in the Revolutionary War and she is the Aunt of Sam Houston of the Alamo.

I even got the Find a Grave people to change the name on the website.

It is a sense of accomplishment Fred and I are so proud of.
My 4th 3rd 2nd and Great Grandparents are all buried there and I want to make sure it is recognized for that, for future generations of our family.

Vacation has come to a end...........

Today is my last day off after a glorious 2 weeks off!

Mr. and I went on our first true vacation in about 10 years.
We headed to Texas to visit his brother.

their home is on a boulevard lined with old oak trees, such a glorious view.

a wonderful old ranch house on a couple acres right in the middle of town.
I could sit out in their yard all day long, it was so relaxing

their front yard is like a park, and you have to love their fence.

We had great weather, my SIL did alot of antique shopping, the boys some work around the house, and great meals out under the Texas stars every night.

Downtown Boerne has so many more shops since I was there last.
This was a great place we went to for breakfast one day.

the interior was beautiful and the food was great!

you can find about anything, even famous pickles

a great Christmas shop

just north is the small town of Comfort, they had one of the best antique malls I have ever been in

Sisterdale general store was where we had a steak dinner under the stars and lights with some great music

true Texas entertainment

of course I enjoyed the cat that reminded me of my sweet Pinky

One day was spent in Fredricksburg, which we had been to before but we went to the Pacific Theater WWII museum, shopping and of course eating German food.

I thought you would enjoy seeing the old 5&10
so much reminded me of the one of yesterday in Charleston

window display

oh how i had forgotten about the fake flowers

row after row of wooden shelving filled with all kinds of items

family, wine, relaxing

we just loved hanging out under the oaks in the Texas Hill Country
