The Beauty of American Fostoria

With Christmas, and no computer I had not been able to show a new treasure!
The American Fostoria square cake plate.
Most hunted by my Girlfriends and I.
I took this at the auction house I was so excited!
I bid on it absentee and got it for $55.

Did you Grandmother have the pattern?
Both of my Grandmother's did.
A luxury of post WWII homes.
My maternal Grandmother used all her pieces for her Eastern Star and book lovers meetings.
Her friends gave her many pieces and I am blessed to have her collection, near 100 pieces.
But no cake plate.

the candlesticks showed up on my Grandmother's table for my parents wedding reception

One of my friends has the memory of her MIL always making a birthday cake for her 6 boys and placing it on fostoria square cake plate
on one of our antique trips she was thrilled to find the round but is still on the hunt for the square.
And oh yes, she tried to offer to buy the square one off of me...NO WAY!

For the 1515 Christmas party I always make a Peppermint Cake.
I could not wait this year.

it looked so pretty (sorry about the lighting, no computer and then I forgot my camera!)

I can never pass a piece of American Fostoria without think of my dear Grandmother.
It always reminds me of a melting ice cube.
It has been fun teaching my Girlfriends about its beauty, watching them buy their first pieces, and adds some fun to our Pyrex hunts.

I think my dear Grandmother would appreciate the fact that something she so adored
is treasured today.

Does the Fostoria pattern bring back any memories for you?
I love it when you share those memories........it is a Sentimental thing with me!

I've followed your blog for quite a long time, and I'm sure you've probably mentioned it, but I am wondering whether your grandparents lived in the Midwest.

Today's picture of your grandmother reminds me so much of my own grandmother: the dress, the hutch, the way the table is laid, but really it's the dress. That could be my grandmother standing there.

How do you store your collection of Fostoria? Do you use it often or only on special occasions?

What a beauty! I happen to have this square cake stand. I don't use it and have no room for it, but I have never been able to part with it! Unlike you, I have actually nothing from my childhood. But it doesn't stop me from being sentimental! Hope it's a great new year for you! So nice to know you came by. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice comment!

What a great find, Anne! I've never seen the square Fostoria cake pedestals before. You got it at a great price! I have the round one, just like your friend! It was given to my parents as a wedding gift back in the early 40's, and is one of my very favorite things. My mom always used to bake cherry chip cake for my sisters and my birthday (one day apart) when we were little. Sounds like you have lots of great memories as well!

Gorgeous Ann! We had nothing like this when I was growing up, and my grandmother lived with us. My first and last piece was a covered candy dish, a wedding gift. Where it went, I'm not sure, but I had a pair of mischievous cats who broke lots of things chasing each other around, lol. It wasn't funny back then, trust me!

I have wanted a square cake plate since I purchased at square tube cake pan that I have yet to use. I love yours. I do have my grqndmother's cake stand, now with the little round knobs around the edge. Is it called candlewhicking? You will enjoy yours for years to come. I can just imagine the birthday cakes that your stand will proudly display.

Hi Ann! Oh, lucky for you finding the beautiful square cake stand! My grandmothers didn't have Fostoria but my aunt did and she left it to me when she died. I don't have near the pieces you do but I love it and would love to find a cake plate I could afford! The cake is gorgeous too.
Happy New Year, friend.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Old Fostoria is a favorite for so many collectors because of it's excellent quality of glass and it's pattern that sets off any table setting. How incredible that you have been able to find a square cake plate to compliment your heirloom Fostoria. It is a beauty and the cake is, too. Fun to have your Pyrexia Friends to share your passions with...and those of us here in blogland, too. Thanks!

What a beautiful plate! I've never heard of the pattern before; I love collecting Depression glass. And I must admit -- I do have several cake plates but none quite as pretty as this one.

It's beautiful! I love that pattern too! I found one at a thrift store a couple of years ago that had been reglued and the glue had turned yellow. I brought it home and as I tried to soak the old glue off, it cracked in the hot water! It's just a tiny little crack, still totally useable, but it made me sick to my stomach that I cracked it!!

OMG! I love the Fostoria square cake stand; it's gorgeous and yes, I'd still it off you too, even though I have no memories of any kind. I am partial to the square shape, as I have one pretty Japanese crystal, but NO Fostoria it is!
I love the vintage photos they so reminded me of my own mom's house back in NY.
Happy 2015.
