I just picked up this pretty pink vase.
I turned it over to see if it had a mark
like USA, McCoy etc.
But I was even happier with the tag I found
as soon as I saw this I knew it came from
Benedict's 5&10 in Charleston!
So I had to have it, wish it was still 29 cents.
Why you ask?
Never a Saturday went by that I was not at Benedict's.
We would go visit my Grandparents every Saturday.
We would pick up Grandma, drive to my Grandfather's gas station
behind Benedict's, park and walk up to the square to shop.

It had the best toy shop where we would go visit the lady that
worked at the counter, Mary.
The main area had tons of cases with candy.
The basement kind was full of colored glass
candy dishes, pots and pans.
Many a day, Mr. Benedict might be sitting at my
Grandfathers gas station "loafing" as they called it.
It might as well of been Santa Claus to me!
Of course the best place on earth closed in the early 1980's when
Walmart came to town.
The building still looks the same, I peer in the windows and I
day dream of a days gone by. Back in the 1960's, this was the
happiest place on earth.
I love the 5 and 10 entry way, I hope it will always be there.
So how could I not buy that vase?
I guess I will keep it at 1515, so it stays in the town it started at.

Oh-I did! I did! It was Cohen's Five and Dime. You could buy everything from a dress to needles there. The owners lived upstairs and were from NYC. I was so impressed with them being in our little farming community. It was a wonderful time going in that store to shop and "dream". My favorite purchase was a "pearl" necklace that cost 19 cents. lol

I did too! I used to work at D&C Dime Store when I was a senior in high school. I loved working the candy counter-measuring out bulk candy, and making popcorn and slush puppies. Now it is a Japanese Steak House. I still think of the dime store and smile every time I drive past!

Guess I led a sheltered life in the KCK Area. MoMa always took us to Macy's on the KC,MO side. My Grandmother took me to the JC Penneys and bought me a two piece bathing suit when I was 12!!! My MoMa nearly had a heart~attack, but finally gave in to let me wear it!!! My Grandma was the BEST!!! Thanks for sharing your childhood memories!!! I love "the days gone past" stories in The Land of Blog!!!

The McCoy vase is a great find! Gosh, McCoy has really gone up in price from the '60s. :)

Hi Ann! Oh, the little vase is lovely! Now you do tell the most wonderful stories! I remember the days of going downtown and stopping in front of the five and dime. Mother would buy me a bag of the penny candy and I would go look at the toys. I got a little something every two weeks. That was when my daddy got paid! :)

I miss those 5&10 stores so much! Now we have the Dollar stores,but they will never match the good ole five and ten cent store...never! I like your vase....brought back some nice memories for you :) Blessings
