Mr. Schreiber's Aprons

Growing up did you have a neighborhood grocery store?
We did in Greenup, on the same block as my house, it was Lee's.
It was fun to go get penny candy, ice cream or lunch meat.
Even 1515 had several, one owned by my Great Uncle Max and
one a block away that is now a liquor store.
(how convenient....wink wink).

When I moved into my neighborhood where I live, there was
a local grocery store.
Schreiber's Grocery
It was a step back in time, they made sliced meat
sandwiches, had milk, egg, breads etc.
Several year ago the store closed.
You can read about it here.

Last month, their home and store were put up for sale.
They had a estate sale.
His wife passed away and now he is in a nursing home.
I bought this sack of butcher aprons, 10 of them for $2.
Some looked like he had never worn them.
I took them and soaked them in Oxi clean overnight.
They came out sparkling clean.
Here he is wearing one of his aprons!
There is a place to put your pen or in my case your readers.

What on earth was I going to do with them you ask????????

I was going to make a special apron for all the cousins for our weekend in
May. However I had printer problems at 1515 and at home.
Mr. worked on the printer today, so I got to work.
I picked out a design for the twins and one for Mr.
ironed the aprons, checked for spots
after I chose my design, I ironed them on with transfer paper.
This is how I made some holiday pillows years ago.
This one I made for Mr. It is his Maternal Grandfather in his a hat and apron himself!
His apron says "Dixie Chef" he was celebrating his 75th birthday circa 1954,
by making BBQ for his family.
Mr. has a fancier grill than his Grandad.
The twins always have a big 4th July party. We can't go this year because
it is in the middle of the week. So I made them Patriotic ones for them to
wear, using some of my postcards I have scanned.

Could not say it any better about our Country.

Here the 3 of them are.
We are going to 1515 next Sunday so I can deliver them then.
I still have 5 more to use, looks like I can be prepared for our fall
cousins weekend.

Here is Mr. modeling his.
What better than to have a picture of your
Grandad in an apron, on your apron.
But everytime I see them, I will be thinking of Mr. Schreiber and
it will remind me of a simpler time when we had our
neighborhood corner grocer.

Ann, you did a splendid job with the aprons which were already neat just white. That you know the former owner even better. Hugs, olive

I am not sure that I knew you were a nurse. Wonderful calling. So needed. She is already starting to study but yes I hope she passes. We would love for her to start one of the new grad programs in August.

What a fun idea for a childhood memory. Our local grocery store was called, Allens. Named after the owner, Mr. Allen. I remember always buying a Butterfinger for 5 cents. When Mr. Allen passed away his children had a yard sale. I purchased an old shopping cart and some metal containers that once held baby food. It's fun to have a piece of a childhood memory. I'm sure everyone is so happy with their new aprons.
Hugs,
Jann

Ann, this is such a sweet post! Love your story about the neighborhood stores. We had them where I grew up too. I remember for 25cents I could buy a bottle of Coke, a piece of candy and a coloring book. Those were the days! Love the snap of the little store owners in their aprons and what a brilliant idea for you to personalize the ones you bought. You've made the aprons keepsakes!
Be a sweetie,
shelia ;)

The story of the grocery was sad. I still miss the couple that ran a grocery in my old neighborhood. They had such good hearts. I like that you made the aprons work for your family:):) Smiles, Susie

Hey, Ann- got about 20 minutes before the crew shows back up today so I thought I would blog hop, since I haven't had time to do much lately. Its too fun being outside and then the rainy days are for getting the house work done.
I love the aprons! I didn't know East Side used to be a grocery store. How cool that the building is still there. There used to be so many all over town.
I hope you grabbed some other things at that sale! You should have had some money left over.
Rural King is started to put their gardening stuff on sale- so check them out when you are in town. You might get lucky in there.
